Etmar is an offline-first app. All content (boats, trips, log entries, trim data, photos, track points) is stored locally on your device. There is no server operated by the provider, no advertising, no tracking and no analytics services. Your data is not passed on to third parties.
For backup and synchronisation between your devices the app uses iCloud (CloudKit, private container). The data resides in your personal iCloud account at Apple; the provider of this app has no access to it. Apple's privacy policy applies.
The app records your GPS position (in the background as well, if you want it to) in order to create log entries and record trip tracks. The anchor alarm and the race countdown also work in the background. Location data does not leave your device or your iCloud. You can revoke the permission at any time in the iOS settings.
The app stores only a small preview with an entry; the photo itself stays in your photo library and is loaded from there when you view it. Photos you take inside the app are saved to your library on request. Access to other content happens only through the picker provided by iOS.
The base map comes from OpenFreeMap, sea marks and harbours from the Overpass servers of the OpenStreetMap community, depth contours from EMODnet Bathymetry. In doing so the requested map section and — as with opening any web page — your IP address are transmitted to those services. Your trips, positions and entries are not transmitted, and there is no identifier that would make you recognisable. If you save your sailing area as an offline pack, these requests do not occur at sea.
When you create a destination, the app can look up the place name for a coordinate (Apple MapKit). That single coordinate is transmitted to Apple.
If you connect the app to a gateway on board, instrument data (wind, depth, heading, position, AIS) is received exclusively on the local network and processed locally. Only you start a recording of the raw data; the files stay on the device until you share them.
If the weather function is enabled, weather data is retrieved via Apple WeatherKit. Your approximate position is transmitted to Apple; Apple's privacy policy applies.
Full backup, GPX/CSV export and sharing individual destinations, courses or routes create files on your device. Where they go is entirely your decision — the app sends nothing on its own.
The subscription is handled entirely through the App Store (Apple). The app neither receives nor stores payment data; it only learns whether a subscription is active. Apple's privacy policy applies to the purchase.
Under the GDPR you have the right to information, rectification and erasure. Since all data is held by you, you can inspect it yourself at any time and remove it completely by deleting the app or the iCloud data (iOS settings → iCloud → Etmar).
